Who are the Springfield Thunderbirds?
The Springfield Thunderbirds are a minor league professional ice hockey team in the American Hockey League. Starting in the 2016–17 season, they officially began their affiliation with the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers. The Thunderbirds play their home games at the MassMutual Center in downtown Springfield.
In May 2016, after the relocation of the AHL Springfield Falcons to Arizona, the AHL's Portland Pirates were sold to a Springfield-based group who wanted to relocate the franchise for the upcoming season. In the 3 seasons the team has played in, they are 97 wins - 99 losses. The Thunderbirds also have done a lot of community service including the T-Bird Foundation as well as a partnership with CHD.
