Frequently asked questions

01/

What if I can’t afford to have my child participate?

CHD and Springfield Thunderbirds work very hard in fundraising to help out struggling families. The thunderbirds provide equipment, Ice, and sleds. These are all included with the program and members pay just a small fee to play for the season

02/

What if my child does not have the mobility and strength to push themselves?

For anyone lacking the body strength, a "pusher" is allowed to push and guide the player.

03/

What if my child has never participated in a competitive sport before?

We have two coaches that are apart of the Springfield College Ice Hockey team who have lots to teach. Our coaches will teach your child how to play and how to play safely. They primarily focuses on upper-body strength, balance, and the ability to handle the puck.

04/

How will they learn to play safe?

Volunteers and staff will help players get in and out of their sleds and be with them every step of the way. Straps secure a player's feet, ankles, knees and hips to the sledge so they will not fall out of the sled. The pick end of the stick must not damage the ice surface or inadvertently puncture or slash other players. No part of the pick or teeth may come to a sharp point so your child will not get injured
